The New Customs House Building in downtown Denver serves as offices for the Department of Immigration and federal court employees. The building also houses a daycare facility for federal employees. Then historic building has under gone several uses and associated remodeling through its life. Then daycare and storage facilities located in the basement were experiencing periodic flooding from unknown causes. A sump pump system had been installed previously but was not able to keep up with occasional storm flows. ASTS met with General Services Administration (GSA) representatives, reviewed historical drawings and conducted dye testing to determine system flows. Our analysis determined the problems were occurring as a result of backups in the City of Denver municipal storm drain systems. ASTS prepared a report with our findings and designed a system to prevent backups from reoccurring. The success of the project prompted GSA to ask ASTS to conduct a similar analysis at the nearby Byron White Federal Courthouse.
